Supporting Data for Martialling bodies: Sporting territoriality and body politics in Hong Kong
The dataset is a collection of interview transcripts on sporting practices in Hong Kong. It explores the politicisation of sports and body politics in Hong Kong. They include interviewees from two field sites: a fitness club and a Chinese martial arts centre. Each field site had 12 interviewees, with the exception of my personal friend, who served as an additional interviewee and was instrumental in inspiring me to undertake this project. The duration of these interviews varied from 30 minutes to three hours. These interviews were conducted in comfortable settings, such as local cafes and restaurants near the interviewees’ residences or workplaces. These conservations took place at times and spaces when the interviewees were not engaged in physical exercise, where they could fully concentrate on the interviews themselves. Out of all the interviews, only two were conducted via videoconferencing. One interviewee had migrated overseas, while the other interview took place online due to safety concerns during a typhoon. The interviewees were fully informed about the research and were aware of the audio recording. They also signed a consent form acknowledging the research protocol and the confidentiality of their personal information.
