Supporting data for Burmese Nationalism under the Military Junta: Elite Manipulation and Grassroots Contention

This is a dataset collected for the MPhil thesis titled, "Burmese Nationalism under the Military Junta: Elite Manipulation and Grassroots Contention". The dataset contains transcripts of 105 personal interviews conducted between May and October 2021 with grassroots actors in Burma, and public addresses taken from Burmese state-owned newspapers from 2004 to 2022. 

Elites are important actors in formation and mobilisation of popular nationalism due to their control over society according to literature on nationalism. The dataset, through the case study of Burma, provides important insights into impact and success of elite-led nationalism.
