This item includes all measurements of the physiological and behavioural responses of Saccostrea cuccullata when they are exposed to emersion in summer; a hot and dry period where the oysters were exposed to direct solar radiation due to the receding of tides.

Chapter 2 investigates the thermal environment and physical characteristics between the three study sites; at three vertical heights within the oyster band, and how these different thermal regimes may impact the survival and reproductive development of the oysters.

Chapter 3 quantifies the thermal stress and desiccation that oysters experience during summer emersion periods by measuring the change in haemolymph oxygen tension, osmolality of bodily fluid (i.e. haemolymph and extra-pallial fluid) and body water content throughout the emersion period in the field and in a laboratory simulated emersion.

Chapter 4 measures the thermal tolerance, cellular heat shock response (i.e. relative gene expression of hsp70) and associated energetic trade-offs in the oysters at different sites and shore heights. This chapter also investigate the potential plasticity in cellular heat shock response of oyster by comparing the cellular heat shock response between field fresh and common garden acclimated oyster.

Chapter 5 explores potential behavioural responses exhibited by oysters by measuring their gaping behaviour during different seasons and tidal conditions.
