To investigate the relation between caregivers’ number application talk and young children’s number learning, I conducted two studies. Study 1 was a correlational study with 93 K3 children and their caregivers. Study 2 was a experimental study with 81 K2 children and their caregivers.

In study 1, the speech of caregivers and children during their shopping time in a local supermarket was audio recorded. The researcher coded caregivers’ number application talk and number non-application talk. Children completed spontaneous focusing on numerosity (SFON) tasks, a numerical interest interview, and number skill tests. Caregivers filled out a questionnaire regarding children’s numerical interest and demographics.

In study 2, children completed spontaneous focusing on numerosity (SFON) tasks, a numerical interest interview at both pretest and posttest. Caregivers filled out a questionnaire regarding children’s numerical interest at both pretest and posttest.
