Supporting data for "The Stories We Share Influence The Support We Receive: Examining The Effects of Narratives on Support Outcomes"
This thesis examines how support-recipients influence social support outcomes through the way they talk about their problems, employing a multi-method approach combining social media analysis, surveys, experiments, and computational methods. In chapter 2, we used reddit data to examine how narrative features of posts (e.g., agency, coherence, affective tone, etc...) influence the quantity and quality of support they receive from other users. In chapters 3 and 4, we use an experimental vignette design to examine how variations in narrative features causally influence participants' desire to support the narrator and the type of support they provide them. Finally in chapter 5, we utilise GPT to examine how narrators feel about the support they receive.
The first two datasets consists of posts and comments extracted from Reddit in 2021 from r/Anxiety and r/Depression which have been coded by trained human coders for narrative features and social support. The third and fourth dataset are from two experimental vignette studies conducted on Qualtrics between 2023-2024. The last dataset consists of an experimental study utilising GPT on Qualtrics collected in 2025.
