This study contributes to strengthening the cultural narratives under rural heritage tourism, assisting tourism managers in optimizing adaptive reuse management policies in the marketization process through preserving intrinsic cultural values. In order to identify the complex point, a comparison study and qualitative methods were used. This paper provides empirical evidence of the impact of functional changes in adaptive reuse on cultural value, emphasizing the importance of preserving historical narratives as a core cultural service provided by the heritage economy. The difference in analysis outcomes between cases indicates the defect of two management models in social, cultural, and economic sustainable development. As the analysis outcomes are based on the current adaptive reuse functions, further research could establish accurate models predicting the impact of function changes on cultural values. Heritage tourism is now becoming a pillar industry in rural areas in China. Determining the inherent logic of the cultural services provided by tourism and historical narratives in the region helps ensure the accurate investment of government and entrepreneurs and avoids the repetitive wear and tear of historical buildings caused by ineffective adaptive reuse. The particular findings implicate an internal contradiction between cultural value authenticity, local groups, and tourism managers. In-depth communication between local groups and tourism managers should be promoted, contributing to the intrinsic alignment which may be essential for achieving high authenticity tourism.
